Teacher vulnerable to being sacked because of his sleep apnea
A teacher from Manatee County, Florida could be sacked from his employment as a middle school teacher because of his osa, which can be taken care of by using a sleep apnea machine. Robert Singer has been suspended from his job and is on administrative leave since the district accuses him of drifting off to sleep through lessons.
Mr Singer states that his sleep apnea is the cause of him dropping off to sleep during the lesson and feels that it was caused because he has been caring for his elderly mom and dad. Superintendent Tim McGonegal explained to FOX 13 news though that Singer had been constantly warned about the trouble, and had already been given a number of written warnings and suspensions:
“He is actually unable to stay awake at work. He has bouts where he'll fall asleep and his role is in the supervision of students in an ISS classroom.”
There exists video evidence of the teacher dropping off to sleep in the school room and McGonegal, who has had sleep apnea himself, feels it is without doubt misconduct which he could be sacked for.
Singer is located at the Braden River Middle School in Bradenton but he himself feels that the school board and the district in general need to have polices in place relating to osa. He as a result believes that the school is being very tough in seeking to sack him. McGonegal however is adamant that as it has been taking place for 2 years (since 2010) and practically nothing has changed, the school is entitled to remove him because he is not offering the right quality of teaching to his students. A sleep apnea machine may have helped resolve Singer’s trouble long before the suspension, and it will be interesting to see how the district deals with Singer.
