SOPA was the bill that got the internet community up in arms regarding the character of copyright legislation online. One of the authors of the CISPA (Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act), Representative for Michigan Mike Rogers said:
&ldquoThey are so completely different. I think it&rsquos extremely important we deal with the issue of SOPA. Clearly, there is no censorship or shutting any website down. The authorities doesn&rsquot have any authority in this bill to do anything like this.&rdquo
There was concern however among some online that the wording of the CISPA was too broad and there has already been some criticism of it in some quarters. Rogers however feels that the two bills are completely different and is like comparing &ldquoApples and Oranges.&rdquo
The CISPA is not concerned with file sharing of music video but rather the intellectual property rights of technological components. Company piracy and theft is a large aspect of cyber crime and American businesses are dropping a lot of money from such cyber theft.
The legislation is much more tightly focused on cyber safety and intends to help protect business and IP owners from threats online. It is designed to help both personal business and the authorities share information on the latest cyber threats and help form protection against attack. It already has support from many companies like Microsoft and Facebook, as well as many congressmen which the SOPA bill never really had. The bill has already passed the committee stage and is because of to have a vote in the House of Reps within the next month or so.
