Is Romney far more pro-immigration than he has been ready to admit?
In Thursday's edition of the Wall Street Journal, conservative writer Fred Barnes implied that US Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney isn't as conservative as is usually assumed on immigration law:

“According to a Romney adviser, his private view of immigration isn’t as anti-immigrant as he often sounded.”

This is interesting for a number of reasons. Romney is more than likely going to be the Republican's nominee for the approaching election against Barack Obama in November after Rick Santorum, his closest rival, withdrew from the race recently. Conservatives are very strong on having firmer immigration laws, and so far Romney has been trying to play to the audience in order to acquire the nomination.

What normally happens with presidential nominees though is that they typically go towards the center as the election draws near as they try to court favor with independents and moderates where the vote will likely be decided. During the primary season, what Americans call the nomination process for prospects, Romney had to appeal to the Republican's conservative base to get adequate assistance for the nomination. He will now however have to estimate how much he endeavors to appeal to the center as opposed to to conservatives.

The suggestion by Barnes in the Wall Street Journal implies that Romney's view is more in keeping with moderates than conservatives.
